Emily Byrski is a multimedia journalist, photographer, writer, and visual storyteller exploring the intersection of people, place, and culture. Her work examines how history, politics, climate change, and travel shape the way we experience the world, combining journalism, photography, videography, and research to tell stories with depth of context.
Before pursuing journalism, Emily spent more than a decade working in digital marketing and content strategy, developing campaigns and building online audiences for international brands. She is also the founder of the lifestyle publication (Em)pire Style of Mind, which grew to an audience of more than 100,000 followers across channels in 2019.
Emily has traveled to 52 countries across six continents, experiences that continue to inform her reporting and creative practice. Whether documenting breaking news, producing visual essays, or writing about tourism, identity, or the environment, she is driven by a curiosity about how people live, what connects us, and the stories that often go untold.
She earned a bachelor's degree in Marketing and Environmental Studies from New York University in 2017 and a master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 2024. At Columbia, her reporting focused on sustainability, climate, and the future of tourism, including investigations into regenerative travel in Morocco and the social implications of frequent flyer levies. She also served as president of the Climate Reporter's Network, helping foster collaboration among emerging climate journalists.
Her reporting, photography, and interviews have been featured by The Guardian, The Nation, The Independent, AP News, BBC, NPR, CBS News, Columbia News Service, Four Seasons Magazine, and other international publications and media outlets.
Today, Emily's work spans journalism, photography, and creative storytelling. Through reporting, visual narratives, and long-form writing, she aims to help people see the world with greater context and curiosity.
